Carabiners connect rope, harness and gear. Load-bearing ones must be 7075 aluminium or steel with a certified strength rating, commonly marked 12–25 kN; decorative keyring carabiners carry no load, and the two must never be confused — one holds a fall, the other fails and causes an accident. Check for a screwgate or auto-lock (any load-bearing use requires a lock), which way the gate opens for your hand, and that the strength rating and certification marks are actually present.
