A garden shovel (hand trowel) transplants seedlings, lifts plants, repots and digs small holes. Heads commonly run 5–8 cm wide in carbon or stainless steel: stainless sheds soil and cleans easily, carbon is harder and wears longer but rusts. Check whether the head is forged in one piece with the tang or merely socketed (socketed heads pull off under load), whether there is a footrest edge so you can push with your boot, and whether the grip suits gloved hands.
