Sandpaper (abrasive paper and cloth) is for sanding, rust removal and polishing, and the decisive parameter is grit: coarse (40–80) removes material fast, medium (100–180) is the general levelling range, and fine (220 and up) prepares for paint and polishes. Backings differ — paper suits flat work, cloth folds without cracking and can be reused, foam conforms to curves. Check the abrasive: aluminium oxide is general purpose, silicon carbide suits paint and metal, zirconia is the most durable.
