Scissors come in household, tailoring, kitchen and electrician versions, and the differences are edge angle, length and steel. Tailoring shears are long and straight to run a true line; kitchen shears are serrated, non-slip and often separable for cleaning; electrician shears have hardened edges and often a stripping notch. Check that the blades pass smoothly against each other (this is what stops fabric from folding instead of cutting), that the pivot screw is adjustable, and that the handles are comfortable in either hand.
