A utility knife uses replaceable trapezoid blades: snap off a segment or swap the blade and it is sharp again — that is its main advantage over a fixed knife. Blades are commonly SK5 high-carbon steel, and bodies come in plastic, aluminium and all-steel. Check that the blade extension locks (an unlocked blade can snap back into your fingers), that blade changes need no tools, and that the grip is non-slip. Different blade angles suit cartons, carpet and plasterboard.
