Wire rope cutters are made for steel cable: chromium-molybdenum edges, harder than cable cutters, with a lever action for small diameters and a ratchet that takes large ones in stages. Do not use them on electrical cable — the edge geometry is meant for steel and will crush and deform copper. Check the maximum diameter (commonly 6–16 mm), whether it is ratcheted, and whether the edges can be resharpened or replaced. Always bind a fresh cut end with tape or a ferrule so the strands cannot spring and cut you.
